Khongjom is a historic place located around 10 kms towards the south of Thoubal. It is the place where the last battle for the independence of Manipur was fought in the year April 1891 against the British army. In March 1891, the British Government declared war in Manipur after the Manipuris killed the Chief Commissioner and his party members. This battle was led by Major General Paona Brajabashi challenging the British army. The battle symbolizes the honorable sacrifice for the motherland.
The place has a memorial erected on a small hillock. It is situated around 36 kms from the state capital Imphal along the Indo-Burma road. The state government of Manipur observes a state holiday on 23rd April every year commemorating the bravery of Major General Paona Brajabashi and his army.
